ABOUT ME. Nací en Bruselas, de padre congoleño y madre española. Crecí entre tres países, tres idiomas y tres formas de entender el mundo. Esa mezcla es la materia prima de todo lo que fotografío. Empecé en la moda como modelo, luego como estilista. Pasados los cincuenta crucé al otro lado de la cámara, sola y sin escuela. He ocupado todos los lugares posibles dentro de una imagen, y eso me dio algo que no se aprende: sé exactamente lo que se siente al ser mirada. Por eso no busco modelos. Busco personas. I grew up between three countries, three languages and three ways of understanding the world. That mix is the raw material of everything I photograph. I started in fashion as a model, then as a stylist. Past fifty, I crossed to the other side of the camera — alone, with no formal training. I have occupied every possible position within an image, and that gave me something that cannot be learned: I know exactly what it feels like to be looked at. That is why I don't look for models.
